This video of B. badis in the wild was shot at Chembarambakkam Lake in Tamil Nadu state, southeastern India. This is not only thousands of kilometres away from its generally recognised distribution in the Ganges and other rivers of northern India but the habitat isn't exactly characteristic of a fish usually associated with slow-moving, turbid waters. Quite intriguing...

I can't believe that this is a biotop for native badis. it's all "wrong"

Almost suggests you could house Badis with Steatocranus cichlids and Synodontis brichardi! /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="Laugh" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Constantly juggling mainly African riverine fish between 6 tanks, from 54 to 566l in size!

Hello Matt!

My first post on this forum and glad to be here. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

This specimen was found quite close to the Chembarabakkam reservoir gates. Probably recently washed out of the reservoir. Eventually, it would have found its way to a more peaceful waters with lesser flow.

The other occurrences of B. badis in the above reservoir were however at stagnant puddles and banks of the canals leading to the lake.

Which are more badid-friendly habitats (with the exceptions of kyar, pyema and corycaeus) all right. So maybe this single specimen - of a small number of specimens - got lost in the fast-flowing biotope?

Hey Shankar good to see you here! /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Do you know of any other random Badis sightings in southern India or was this a one-off?

Stefan, rather than the fish got lost in the current, it could have been an intent to prey on the E. maculatus fries found nearby amongst the vegetation.

Matt, we found more badis specimens in the same lake in the recent past too. There are reports of findings in a neighbouring state too; a place called Ethipolada in Andhra Pradesh state, India.
