I accidently stumbled upon this image and thought I'd share it. I do feel it's still one of the more elusive species and this is the first photo I've come across that shows a live fish in lateral aspect under water. If I read correctly (German) the photo is taken at the shop of a Norwegian named Thor, in 2009. My only hope is that it is still in the hobby.

From a single and this small a photo without collecting locality, there's no way to be certain.

Plus it's small and appears to be female, not making for an easier identification. I'm asking around for more info and who knows; there might be more photos. For many species of the akarensis group also goes, like many other Betta; without knowing its exact location it's sometimes impossible to make a correct, positive ID.

Why did I post it then? Well, because I feel there's a good chance the fish is indeed obscura.

Attached are the other known obscura photos (from the type locality).

But then, let's add aurigans to the mix, which also is an elusive species and comes from the remote island of Natuna. (I tried to [img][/img] them but they don't show then.)

I think it's due to no one collecting them. A member of Petfrd noted that all those in the shop and hobby died. /sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />
