Just for fun, let me show a few photos of fry that was found in waste bucket. Initially I had no idea what they may be (I check several tanks for things like this and then combine the residue together to see if something hatches.... this time something did.)

So, 6 weeks ago, newly hatched, 1.5mm, look and move a lot like danio fry just small:

At three weeks of age

At four weeks of age

At four weeks of age (2nd photo)

At five weeks of age, nearly 1cm, this is one week ago

For this type of fish, this is far the slowest growing fry I've met. OTOH, they seem to be quite stable, even at the initial size, and feeding was not a problem.

Definitely, not clear which one yet. The leading candidate is panda (Yaoshania pachychilus).

Thanks, Charles,

This is actually the 2nd try.... the first was a disaster, I put a couple of them into what I thought was an empty tank, and it actually had a 6mm panda cory hiding there... naturally the cat ate the loaches. :(

No, it was done in Germany already :(

But it is a US first, and it may be the first documented one: I took and will continue taking shots of the fry development.

I suspect there will be more breeding before long -- many people have the fish and the fish bought 1.5 years ago is entering the breeding age now....they are very slow developing comparing to other hillies and all (or almost all?) imports were juveniles.

The babies are very cute.... I moved them to a tank with java moss and good light, it is real fun to watch them... very shrimp like...

BTW, here is a thought: I tend to be deeply skeptical when Maurice the Terrorist changes things.... but his invention of Yaoshania seems to be warranted from the reproduction point of view: totally dissimilar to Erromyzons. What would be interesting to know one day is just what Yaoshania is related to.... probably not the case (too far geographically), but perhaps it is related to Protomyzons? If not them, then what?

PS. It is not 100% certainty that these are Pandas just yet.... probably 99% because the other candidates are things like beaufortia and annamia, hard to see how they can be. I'll ask Matt to rename the thread once we are certain.
