Cardinals Losing Colour

I've just noticed that my cardinals are losing their red colour almost entirely overnight. By the time I return from work later in the day, the colour has returned. Is this normal or is there an underlying problem? Stress?

Many species of fish change colour at night - the cardinal tetra among them.
