I was in one of our local pet shops today and I saw some danios labelled Danio kyathit. There were two forms in the same tank - striped and spotted.
But they all had yellow fins instead of orange. Besides the "wrong" color of the fins they look like Danio kyathit pictures that I see on the net.
Anyone know of yellow fin varieties of this fish? Or what else could this fish be?

This, and also:
Orange is simply more intense yellow. In a number of species of fish yellow and orange alternate, orange often indicative of a fish kept better.... consider M.boesemani where orange (and even red) is characteristic of better lines, while lfs stock usually is yellow, or P.furcatus, where yellow is typical, but well raised fry may change yellow to orange when it matures..
With D.kyathit, some lines (locales) appear to have very little of yellow/orange to start with.... the spotted group I keep now is like this, the fins are at best yellowish.
The color is affected by the background and light too.... expect better colors on darker background.
And of course, a photo would have been helpful too, but off hand, this sounds like "nothing extraordinary".

I believe mikev is spot on here. Who amongst us has not seen a tank of washed out White Cloud minnows at the dealer that become vibrantly colored in a better setting?
I've always though that fish try to blend with the color of the substrate to lessen predation from above. A form of natural camouflage.

They sure do.. but the hunting types camouflage too....
On an aside: one general problem is that we just don't know enough about the locale variations of Asian fish, not anywhere close to what we know about say, rainbows. And some local variations are unusual... my current puzzle is a group of M.guentheri that is plain strange, both in appearance and behavior, and no way of knowing which river they might have come from /sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />
