Hey Folks

In 2004 this beautiful strain of Oreochromis came into the U.K. through Dutch wholesalers, thus was known in the hobby as the Dutch Pearl Mouthbrooder - as the females had beautifully patterned bodies.

At the top left of our photograph you will see a male in colours that reflect the status of 'second in charge' male. Top right is the 'boss male'. The fish below are all females.

I bred these fish through 4 generations but then either males or females 'turned sterile' - cannot think of a better way to describe what happened.

Do any members of SF know of a hobbyist who had a little more luck and, thus, still has these fish or if the strain is still available on the European Mainland?

If this fish is anything like the "pearl oreochromis" in aquaculture, it is probably a niloticus x aureus with something else thrown in and is known to lose fecundity in a few generations (the prime reason for hybridising tilapia in aquaculture is to create sterile fish that will eat to grow and not to breed). If you really want to maintain this fish, out cross it with a normal fish of either parent species and select the traits you want from the offspring.

Thanks retro

Unfortunately the last of my adults went to the 'big aquarium in the sky' a few weeks past.

Hi Dave

Are these the true form from the Nile floodplain Pablito? Much better looking fish than those pearl wotsits, the males get a superb rosy flush across the forequarters when breeding on a white gold base colour.
