im going to be removing the juwel jumbo filter i have fitted in the rio 400 soon. i already have a tetratec ex 1200 external fitted as well which has been running for about 10 months, im going to be adding a second external to the tank but im split between - buying another ex 1200 (like them very much - never had a problem with mine and for about £60 delivered is excellant value) or an eheim ecco pro 300 (new filter from ehiem - only a few pound more)
the reason im split is that - while i like the tetratec very much and would reccomend them to anyone, it would mean that theres quite a large flow going into the tank and im looking to add a group of wild discus which wouldnt probably like the flow in there. the eheim has a lower flow rate but also comes with eheim media which is probably a lot better than the tetratec media so that even though the filter volume is nearly half , the amount of bacteria it will hold will probably be close to the tetratec one.
anyone with some input? i suppose i could turn down the flow coming from the tetratecs but im a little unsure whether this will cause problems for the pumps long term (the only way to reduce flow is by part closing the outlet from the filter) ie the pump will in effect be trying to push water through a smaller hose - in the booklet for the filter it says that this can be done for feeding fish etc but doesnt indicate whether it is ok long term. im erring on the side of the eheim at the moment , any one have any input?
also has anyone got a preferance for any particular media for externals? as im happy to add or change the media that the filters come with (added more bioballs and extra sponges to the one ive got running now)

Turning down the flow should not really be a problem, as the impeller is magnetically driven there should be no extra stress put on the pump, The rest of your question I cannot answer....

i hadnt thought of that , cheers
if it isnt going to cause a problem then ill probably go back to the tetratec but change some of the media in it to siporax or eheim

I had two of the Tetratecs back in England and used to run one of them on about 2/3 flow; never had any problems. Baz is right there shouldn't be any extra strain on any mechanical parts plus I seem to remember Tetra give instructions on reducing the flow in the product manual?

Media-wise I believe the newer "Substrate-Pro" Eheim one is supposed to have a massive surface area although I've never used it. I actually went with the bioballs that came with the Tetra filters with pretty good results for my geos. In my other externals I had Ehfimech and Ehfisubstrat topped off with sponges which also worked fine.

Wild discus eh? Cool choice Neill. What flavour are they?

Did you get these in the end Neill? I was contemplating wild Discus myself, but never followed through.

not yet , im still waiting for something i like - toms just got back from brazil where they were hand catching wild discus - i think brians getting some imported he hand picked as well, so ill see what they are like but ive always liked the greens - i just need to get rid of the geos first but i want to successfully breed them otherwise ill feel like ive failed with them. once ive had a decent brood and brought them up im going to swap them over for the discus.

Hi one simple answer for the flow from an external is what id and that is simple point the spray bar inwards instead of outwards and also slightly pointing upwards and this seems to result in reduce flow around the rank without reducing flow /thumbs_up.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="thumbs_up.gif" />
As for the media eheims substrate pro is the best but at a price {i use nearly twenty litres of the stuff /ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":o" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" /> },it can block easily so make sure you got a good prefilter in your set up /thumbs_up.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="thumbs_up.gif" />
