I've been paying off a 125 gallon tank on layaway, and after asking around I decided on an Eheim 2217 Classic canister filter coupled with an Aquaclear 110 HOB filter.

Tomorrow my LFS is having a massive sale and I am hoping to get a 220 Gallon tank for less than I was going to pay for the 125 gallon.

Am I correct in assuming the eheim + the aquaclear will be inadequate for the 220? What about the eheim + 2 x aquaclear 110s?

These are the other options at my LFS:

Fluval FX5  Up to 400 Gallons, 924 GPH turnover
Rena Filstar XP4-XL  Up to 265 Gallons, 450 GPH turnover
Cascade 1500  Up to 200 Gallons, 350 GPH turnover

These 3 are all canisters. The cascade is probably inadequate. The cascade and the rena and much cheaper than the fluval.

Does anyone have any experience with the fluval or rena filters?

Thanks. Going to be at the store when they open to try and get the 220 gallon tank.

Hi there.
The Eheim 2217 is rated at roughly 265 GPH and the Aquaclear at 500 GPH. In a 220 gallon tank they would combined give you a total turnover of more than 3.5 x per hour. That should be absolutely sufficient if the tank isn't overstocked and gets regular waterchanges.

So I got it, they deliver it on Wednesday. I forgot to bring my camera, but I found two pics online, one of the stand, and one of the tank/cover/lights and I morphed them together with my fabulous Paint skills, lol.

The dimensions are 72x24x30

I know an 8 foot tank would be better, but this is the one that was on sale. $600 off. Ended up being $100 less than the 125 gallon setup I was looking at.

Can't wait for it to get here and start setting it up.

I am still deciding what to stock. I had started a thread here:

Stocking Suggestions

But didn't get much of a response.

I think I'm going to go with the Rena, plus the Aquaclear. I do weekly water changes in all my tanks and typically my nitrates are always 5 ppm, with zero nitrites and ammonia of course.

Nice tank! I'm envious. I'd stick with Eheim classic if it was me. I've looked at the Renas, they feel cheaply made. I've also read more than one account of their connectors breaking. 2 x 2217s or 1 x 2217 + AC 110 would be my choices. I'd also add a Maxijet 900-1200 for more movement.  I have 1 x 2217 + 1 AC 110 + Maxijet 900 on my heavily stocked 4ft 75gal and it works well.
