there could be somrthing on the gravel but we couldn't tell you without a little more info on how the fish died.

When you say 'did my water changes' what do you mean? Did you cycle the tank? Do you have fish in it at the minute?

Also, do you have a note of the current test results for ammonia and nitrIte?

Being paranoid, I always wash and then boil old gravel before reusing it.

What fishes were affected? Were they well-established?

Cake or death?

Apologies for not being able to give you a definitive answer, but there is some more information that we'll need to help. Bear with us please.

Have you lost any of your fish, or is your friend the one with losses?
How big is his tank?
What fish did he have in there, and how many of each species?
Did any of the dead fish show any symptoms?
What is your friend's maintenance regime like?
How much water does he change and how often?

How exactly did you cycle your tank?
Was it simply a case of leaving it to stand for a week?
How recently did the LFS test your water?
Did they give you exact readings or simply say "fine"?
What fish do you have, and how many of each species?

It could be that your friend hasn't been maintaining his tank properly, and that has caused his losses. If so, then you don't have to worry about your own tank but ti would be good if you could help him avoid this reoccurring.
