Most of the fish in my big tank are looking pretty ill and I have no idea what the problem is.

They're clamped and bits of their fins look like they're "eroding" - white stumps on the end of little tears/splits.

Any ideas?

Oh no Dunc /unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> It really sounds like a water quality issue. What's your maintenance regime? Have you changed anything about the set-up recently? Started feeding with something different, perhaps? Pics would help a lot, too.

Regular 10 day water changes as always.. if anything it seems to have come about AFTER doing a water change?

I've hoyed some Myxazin in - it looks like a bacterial infection and I'm getting really worried.

Have already lost both the female steindachneri and my last Panda.. the male Stein is on his last legs as is one of your old Satanopercoids (the runtish one).

I think the Satanopercoid will recover but not looking too good for the Stein :/

Bugger /sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> Perhaps the water board have added something nasty to the supply. If you're not using a heavy metal remover it might be time to start doing so. The other option could be that there's a pocket where uneaten food is collecting somewhere. Do you vac under the bogwood when you're doing maintenance mate?

Aye and tbh I usually sit down and make sure they've eaten all their food anyway - now that I'm in the house they're not on the auto feeder.

I use a dechlorinator as standard and that claims to break up heavy metals.. dunno how true that is though.

Hmm, ok mate. Try to grab some pics when you have time. Good luck with them in the meantime.

It's taken a nasty death toll.. two cories, tetra, two female steindachneri (looking like the male will die shortly too tbh). :'(

The bigger fish are mostly fine, thankfully.

It would make sense that the smaller fish would be affected first mate. Fingers crossed for the others.

Not much else to show. Lots dead.. bigger fish are either seemingly fine or clamped with little white tufts in "fin rips" etc. One daemon has some white over the top of his eye.

Mmm, it reminds me of ammonia burn. As I mentioned earlier mate, I think the water board may have added something odd to the supply that day you did your last water changes. They sometimes do this to help sanitise the pipes. I'd suggest a 30-50% water change today and again tomorrow. Good luck! /unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

I hope I am not too late on this one. I am with Matt looks like Northumbrian Water are dosing /angry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="angry.gif" /> . Don’t really know anyone anymore but will try to find out for you. Water changes are the way forward. In the mean time can you source water from elsewhere?

Well apart from the aforementioned death toll they seem ok.

They've unclamped now.. daemon still has a little bit of white on one eye but I think that'll go fairly soon.

Remaining lot: two cories, two of your satanopercoids, three daemon.

Heavy losses /sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Yeah, he's tough as hell that one. Basically all of the smaller fishes died and the bigger ones made it through.. excluding the supernaturally tough cories /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

Oh btw, managed to get a pic of one of the dead fishes before I removed him.

Not nice, as you can see - fairly sure it wasn't just ammonia burn.

No mate that is nasty. Poor guy /sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> I wasn't suggesting it was ammonia burn in the first place though, just that it reminded me of it. Any joy with the water board?

Nah, haven't spoken to them. I have heard they're increasing their dosage of fluoride.. surely that can't affect the fishes though? Lots of places with fluorised water.

The water in Newcastle is already dosed with fluoride mate. It's one of the few areas of the country that is at present, so I don't think that'll be the cause. The government are talking about adding fluoride nationwide, and it's causing a bit of a rumpus with some environmental groups. I don't want to bore anyone here, but if you're interested have a look at this link.

Any updates on the fish?

They're still not "right". They're wearing mild stress colours almost permanently, fins still quite close to their bodies.. doesn't seem to be any white markings or clouding on the eye now but they're still not happy /sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />
