Hi guys and gals,
After doing tank maintenance today, I discovered for the second time, that one of my Honey Gouramis (Tricogaster Chuna) died mysteriously. The tank is a 37gallon (140 liter) tall. The other inhabitants are various small tetras (neons, black phantom, rummy nosed), some golden white clouds, corydoras (2) a teensie clown loach and a baby pleco. I use water softening pillow, a Rena contained filter for a larger tank, plenty of air, ph 6.8 , live java fern and anubia, and that's about it.

Had a happy little pair for about 2 months, and then the male died. So I thought it was a fluke and bought another male. Now the female is missing (another couple of months later). My ph varies when I do water changes. Are there any particulars that this type of fish need? Thanks in advance! /huh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="huh.gif" />

In a word Reva, no. You're probably just having bad luck with farm-bred gouramis as knowing you it's unlikely you're doing anything wrong maintenance-wise. /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Edit: also moved to appropriate forum; how much does the pH vary during water changes btw?

Unfortunately this is quite common, in my experience when these are kept in pairs one will always be dominant and it will usually end up with the other one hiding away a lot and then turning up dead.

I have only ever had success with these when I have kept them in well planted tanks in groups of 4+

It's always sad to lose a fish and when you lose two of the same specimen in a rather short time one always wonders if one does something wrong. And perhaps the soft gender, like us, Reva, always worry more then the blokes. That's in our nature. I agree with Matt, it can't be something you do wrong, you're so caring (and not just about fish).
Through the 18 months I became a fish-lover I have lost my share of fine finned fishy friends aswell. In the last 2 months I lost 2 neon tetras, a sumatran, an ember and my favorite pleco. But there are no indications of failures in the water, the fish or the tank and it's plants. I am in the middle of moving to another house, which will take place at the end of this month, and I know there will be a large chance of losing one or more of my fine finned friends. Good luck with your tiny friends, Reva. Don't worry too much. /wub.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wub.gif" />

thanks for the input and sympathy. Matt I will check the ph again and get back to you....
I plan on moving them all to a larger tank, if my plans go as I hope (I saw a 125gallon for sale by owner that I could move the rainbows into, and then everyone moves up in tank size). If I can upgrade like that, then I will take Duff's advice and get several. There's another color variety. Mine are gold and yellow, but there are also white / rose colored ones. Should I mix them?

Good luck on the move Lizz /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
