While netting some mosquito larvae from my water butt yesterday I caught some small, red 'worms'. Are these bloodworms and if so, are they okay to feed to my Harlequins? Thanks.

Although these flies resemble mosquitos, they are very different. Chironomus is a non-biting midge.

btw I almost read that line as midget  /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="Laugh" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

They do look like that, about 10mm long and about 1mm wide. I was hoping to catch a few, rinse them under the tap in the net and drop them into the tank.

Do it and don't even bother rinsing 'em.

I had a plastic tub set up last year (by set up, I mean left out, didn't bother clearing /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />) that had all the detritus from two external filter cleans; by the end of the summer there was literally hundreds of bloodworm in it, and mosquito larvae. Was good feeding. Unfortunately, with the kids that much more active and inquisitive, I won't have the same luxury this year.
