Can anyone shed some light here? Sources such as Fishbase say 50 - 65 mm depending on species, but hobbyist literature frequently mentions sizes of 10 cm+. Presumably the latter is TL, i.e., including caudal fin plus filaments?

TL, Matt. I've kept had M. opercularis in a large pond in summer, more than 12 cm TL counting the filaments of the tail fin. But 12 cm TL proximal from snout to tail for M. opercualris, M. spechti and M. ocellatus is a good size, hardly to be exceeded.

I haven't kept the other spp

Hi Matt,

my M. opercularis also didn´t exceed 11-12 cm TL (SL 6-7 cm) and M. spechti stayed even 1 cm smaller.

Here some pics

Thanks guys, and to Dana for the great pics!! Ok to add them to the profile?

So, 11-12 cm TL = 8-9 cm SL?

Of course, you can use the pics.

I would rather say TL 11-12 cm = 7-8 cm SL

Thank you very much Dana. :) Your fish look like the 'real' M. spechti whereas many of those seen around the web appear to be M. erythropterus with red pigmentation in the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins.

The latter was a synonym, is it now a valid taxon again?

Yeah, reference is: Herder, F., J. Huykebrouck and K. Busse. 2010. Catalogue of type specimens of fishes in the Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig, Bonn. Bonn zoological Bulletin 59: 109-136.

offtopic: Matt, should I post, or should I send you some few average quality pics of Betta strohi, B. unimaculata and B. ocellata?
