My Macropodus opercularis

Hello all together!

I have kept Macropodus opercularis in different tanks for a couple of years and had the chance to see many funny, crazy, astonishing, incredible behaviors, and yet they still amaze me again and again.
Now I managed to make a video of 2 obviously gay males, constructing and caring together for a bubblenest and even mating under the nest:

Hard to believe, but the 2 "lovers" are father (the dark one) and son (the light blue one) and were even rivals, competing for the same female, which was the devote mate of the older male, respectively the mother of the younger male.
End of September the courted female suddenly
disappeared from the outdoor tank, where my Paradise Fish spend the summer.
Now the 2 males, together with a young adult female (daughter of the older, respectively sister of the younger male) and some small Macropodus offspring are back in house, in a 80 x 50 cm tank, shown in the video.

Here are some pics of my Macropodus op. taken last winter.

Male, vanished female and offspring

Very nice images and interesting behaviour Dana, thanks for sharing. :) May we use some of the pics in our species profile (credited to you, of course)?

Of course you can, Matt. Please pick out whatever you think is useful.

Here are a few more pics and a short video showing a classic spawning.

I'm afraid the love story of my Macropodus is set to a hard test right now.Smile
The young female is determined to join in the fun and sneaks cleverly between the two males.
The resistance of the males decreases every day and even the jealous younger male accepts the unusual Threesome.

I definitely don´t need TV anymore. Laugh

Best regards,

Dana

Summer season is over for my Macropodus opercularis. This is how one of my two groups (the younger) look like, after they have spent couple of month in the garden. I´m proud of them! :)

I have kept the "lover boys" together with a female and a third male as a separate group, in another tank, over the summer and indoor as well. I´m curious, if they still maintain their relationship. I´ll see it only in the next days/weeks, as observations outdoor were quite obstructed.

I showed the pics, because I just brought the M. op. inside. It is really not meant to remind you, Matt.:)

I was wondering if M. opercularis forms stable pairs if one keeps more than 1 male and female in the same tank? This is something I could not imagine, so I was not looking out for this as I was keeping and breeding them years ago. But other people suggested this behaviour. Also this gay pair seems to support this hypothesis?
