Yellowtail Spiney Eel, Mastacembelis aculeatus

One of the coolest(and smallest eels) on the market(here)!

It would be nice to see a pic out of the bag but I agree with Andy that it is Mastacembelus pancalus

They are closely related but not the same. At least that's what my research says. I will try and get some more pics soon. I don't want to stress him out already, since he's only been in the tank almost a week.

Hi Sharkdude ,your fish is a Panclas /thumbs_up.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="thumbs_up.gif" /> Indian Yellow Tailed Spiney Eel , I've got a few myself /thumbs_up.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="thumbs_up.gif" /> very nice fishes , mine seem to thrive on frozen Bloodworm and chopped Earthworm ! they are quite inquisitive and once settled in respond to movement outside their tanks ,in my case a wriggling finger /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

I've found that Spiney Eels are great escape artists so make sure there are no openings in your aquarium , once they have settled in they are okay ,but for the first few days they seem to avidly look for escape holes /wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

I've had a peacock eel in the past so I'm used to the escape artistness /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />. He hides under the driftwood mostly right now. Once he settles in I'm sure he'll come out to play more often.

My research says I can expect a maximum of 6-8" in aquaria, how big are yours? Mine is about 4.5"

Mine vary between 4 and 7 inches roughly , in the same tank there are a few M.zebrinus and about 5 M, species ? this last one seems to be a dwarf , if memory serves me right they came from Thailand ? all my Spineys seem to get along , I never see any bickering !

How many did you get ?

I only got one. I may pick up another...I am trying to keep enough room for some Roseline Sharks( Puntius denisonii)

How long before I can see him eat because I haven't yet. I use a pvc pipe to direct food right at him so the barbs don't get his food, but he's such a slow eater they get it anyways.

The only food mine seem to eat is Bloodworms or Earthworms full stop !

Ahh you fancy some Denisoni Barbs , very nice !

I have six P .chalakudinensis , very similar to Denisoni's , beautiful fishes , I put some [crappy] pics up a while back !

Haha, yeah they are my second favorite fish of all time. I've had them in the past but they where weak stock and died. Had them for 3 months and absolutely loved them. Here is a pic of my first three a few days before they died.

They look nice in that pic , what happened ?

I had a couple of Denisoni that died being moved from one of my tanks to another , I might give them a try again , stunning fish !

My Panaque maccus got a really bad case of Ich and it spread to my Denisoni and Capoeta tetrazona(platinum green var.). Took out everything in the tank except my Schistura cf. balteata.
