OMFG Mark you've been on a serious spending spree! Looks like at least two species?

Just a bit Matt /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="Laugh" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

What makes it better is Joy went with me and she told me to buy extra fish so I didnt have to hide the receipt /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="Laugh" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

There could have been 3 or 4 species in the tank Matt, there was such a variation in patterns and markings it was unreal. What made it harder was that when the net went in they just all swam into it, it was harder getting them out of the net than in it /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="Laugh" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Nice group MadDuff /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> I love how they go from drab little whiskered face to the other extreme of flashy caudal fin. What are your plans for them?

I am hoping to add some more to the group at some point and then given that they are in a tank on their own I hope to get them to spawn /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

way cool. My husband keeps saying "only Four, only Four Tanks!" Hence, community tanks with a theme...and a continued amateur status, forever, Amen
(once I wanted to become a marine biologist...but I had two children and no online computer courses) /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Mad Duff, how long and how stocky are your Aborichthys, typically?

I've got a group of six coming to the end of a 14-day quarantine in my Korrall60, which came from http://www.wholesale-tropical-fish.co.uk (Fareham, Hampshire, ~30mins drive from me... A great young student vet couple from another forum I'm active in have an account with these wholesalers, who then pass on the fish for forum members for very little in excess of VAT on the prices)! /wub.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wub.gif" />

My group varies in length from ~3cm to ~7cm, with bodies that are about 1/2 to 3/4 of the thickness of a typical pencil. Like you, I'm not so sure if I am have at least two different species in the group, due to major pattern and background colour differences. Having looked on http://www.loaches.com briefly, there seems to be several species to this genus, some of which are barely known about. I think one of them only reaches 3.5cm length as adults! /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" />

These guys are quite possibly my favourites, as they are so bold for tiny critters... When I do the at least twice weekly 50% water changes, they all come and "greet me" while both emptying and refilling the tank! /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="Laugh" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> And this is before I get to see them doing the typical "sand grain transportation" while making burrows under any furniture (they use base of bogwood/rock as a secure lid for burrows)! /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="Laugh" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I'm a little worried about adding these guys to the Rio240 just yet, due to their size and the recent unpredictability of my two Opsarius, both of whom have changed personalities so much since me watching them in the shop tank for ~8 weeks. They have become territorial bullies both with each other and the other fish in the tank (especially the 12 Alestopeterus caudalis) without knowing causing serious damage. However, I'm worried these smaller Aborichthys may be viewed as "patterned worms" and may be devoured /sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Constantly juggling mainly African riverine fish between 6 tanks, from 54 to 566l in size!

Unfortunately I lost all 10 within 5 days /sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

I think the initial travel may have really upset them as it was a very very hot day and we were a bit longer travelling home than anticipated, by the time we got home a couple were not looking to good but seemed to settle once in the tank. I do think that these fish do not tolerate heat at all well, I added some salt a a general tonic but I don't think it was an illness that took them down as the fish already in that tank are still fine.

I know a friend has had these on three separate occasions and has still yet to have them last longer than a fortnight. It sounds like your group are doing well so what ever you are doing they must like.

I wouldn't imagine the Alestopeterus caudalis causing problems but the Opsarius may do, I think these should be kept in groups as like you are seeing now small groups can become aggressive with each other whereas larger groups seem to be able to get along without one fish been targeted as much.

Thats too bad Mark , I know you were really looking forward to observing them , that s fishkeeping ,though I'm sure you will find a way of keeping them again !
