well they were actually being maintained in 25c so to avoid any problems that's what they've gone into. However a local chap has had 4 for some time that he picked up down south and they've been under 2 inches of ice over the cold period that we had recently. I also found a French guy who has them outside in large vats but I don't know the temp. he has them at at the moment.
There are different states in the US that people have said they've collected them and all are fairly warm southern states but the fish were caught in shallow oxygen rich water. The telling comment from one officianado is that they are robust fish!

Cool fish! /thumbs_up.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="thumbs_up.gif" />

I had them a few years ago, but all few month one died and at once I have not one anymore. It seems I had only males, and a few months after overwintering they looks so: (pics were taken without flash)

this is by way of a information post for UK members. Currently probably the best shop in the NW has a shipment of Notropis chrosomus in. They are extremely reasonably priced and sexable. Flying out fast, but there was still a significant number when I looked in the tank last night.

I got a bunch of type 1 last week.
no hybrids, not treated with hormons to render infertile, females and males.
pablitos pics show type 2, Thomas certainly had a hybrid, only males. it's a pity these are going around in europe

How to differentiate the two types Charles? Do they refer to different wild populations or ornamental strains?

I think that there are different wild populations. the problems with the differentiation come from the keeping in aquarium. seems to have become a battle of arguments in Germany amongst breeders, sometimes with religious furor.
for infos see here

http://www.aquakultur-genzel.d.....wissen_pub...omus_zucht.html
http://www.wp-3d.de/regenbogen.....hiner_-_no..._chrosomus.html

some breeders pretend that there is only one form, changing colours when spawning. I would say, that s right for the already mixed colour forms.
my breeder says that I`ve got the type 1, as stated in the link too.
