I reckon it might start looking like a specialised Puntius forum if I keep starting threads every time I have a question so am starting this thread to keep things tidy. /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

First question is, should Puntius arulius have a common name given that the fish we´ve known for so many years as "Arulius barb" has turned out to be P. tambraparniei? I´m leaning towards giving tambraparniei the Arulius barb common name and leaving that field blank in the P. arulius profile. What do you guys think?

I would agree regardless of new latin name it has always been known as "Arulias Barb"

hmm, there lies a problem, as the P. arulius has always been known as the 'arulius barb', it may be confusing to call the P. tambraparniei the same name, until folk realise the old arulius barb is infact P. tambraparniei, they will continue to call both fish arulius.
i would go with something like, P. tambraparniei (wrongly known as/commonly mistaken as the arulius barb) or something along those lines.

I would agree with Keith565 - need to explain the difference otherwise will just confuse people?

Mick, you weren´t supposed to look until it´s finished! /blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blush.gif" /> /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> A pic of the real arulius would be superb as I haven´t been able to find one anywhere on the web mate. Just so you know, I have all your loach images saved just haven´t found the time to upload them yet. All your help is very much appreciated by Dunc and I. /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Keith/Dave. I´ve put an explanation into the "notes" section at the bottom of the profile for both species. If anyone searches for "Arulius barb" and reads the profile that is returned at the top of the search results (P. tambraparniei) they should get all the info they need. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Cool, thanks Mick I´ll do that now. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> How did you find the temperament of the arulius compared with tambraparniei?

Ps - it´s this one right mate?

yup thats the one mate, that pic was taken not long after they'd settled in the tank, if my memory serves me right it's lenght was around 2.5 inch SL, when i parted with them the males were all on the 4 inch SL mark.
behavior wise very similar to tampraparnei, the males are always trying to see who's top dog, colouration wise when tetre doing this is, the stomach and gill area go pinkish the black blotches virtually dissappear and it takes an emerald green cast over the top halve of the body.
when having their frequent tussles i took a pic and all 3 males had locked lips and were going round the tank in a spiral, brilliant to watch mate.

I bet that was great to watch. I had a group of P. assimilis for a while and the males were just stunning when they displayed at each other. Is the fish in the pic a young male mate?

Edit - I've added your pics to the profile Mick. Took the liberty of cropping them a little but still have the originals so if let me know if you'd prefer us to use those. Link here.

Ok edited to remove bump as I have another question Mick if you don't mind. I've been reading the Pethiyagoda and Kottelat 2005 paper and was wondering what your take on the current state of Puntius assimilis is. Am I right in thinking that assimilis consists of a number of variants, all of which are at present considered to be assimilis but some of which may turn out to be distinct species?

All-so on Petfrd I remember some pictures of a fish with an additional mid-body blotch (posted by Pulchellus I think) that I saw when researching filamentosus. You guys were speculating that this could also be assimilis? Any info on any of this much appreciated! /wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

Matt it was me who posted pics as well, these fish are going to be donated to Bolton aquarium as soon as they get the indian tank ready, big HINT pablito.

it has all the characteristics of assimilis except the blotch in the centre of the body, but Andrew Rao who sent them for me and Andy was hoping these could be exclamatio, but they fail as in the description this fish does not have dorsal extension whereas the ones i have do, but he also sent another fish with them and from reading the discription these are very close, but it will need an ichthyologist to confirm it.
i've got a few old pics of them, i'll post them when i find them and see what you lot think.

So do you think that fish with the midlateral blotch is an assimilis variant or something else mate? And your hunch is that the bottom one is exclamatio? Thanks for posting the pics btw, all are real beauts. /wub.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wub.gif" />

quite possibly a variant but it's better to wait for the bods to sort that out, and yes the last pic is what could turn out to be exclamatio, in a way thats why they're going to Pete & Paul
as they can carry it further than me hopefully.
