Are shells found on a beech safe to put into a tropical tank?

I've washed them, but they still smell of saltwater... Are they safe to use in a tropical tank?

There should be no disease issues between fresh and salt water

Obviously they need to be cleaned of any debris

One word of warning (if you do decide to use them only use a few) over the long tern they WILL alter the water chemistry of your aquarium. Raising the pH and hardness slightly.

(I think you live in a soft water area?) Though one or two (a few) small shells ONLY providing you are keeping a general community tank will not cause any issues.

Certainly the guppies wont mind at all /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Ahh cheers for that! You've got a good memory... you sure the red "thingy" guppies won't mind? /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="Laugh" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I've been washing them overnight and I'll give them a good scrub later before deciding what to do!

I'm gonna go and get some pebals later and make a shelf curved shelf to raise the floor at the rear, and put another plant in there today!

I'll decide after I've done that, cos I don't want it to look too clutered!

Edit: Would it be wise to wash them with tank water when I do a partial water change, or would that have no effect on it?

It certainly wouldn’t do any harm to use the water you would otherwise discard

I didn't bother to use them! Got some pebals today, and I'm happy with how it looks! Anything more would clutter such a small tank!

Pics in the relevant section! /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
