I have found that there is great deal of mis-information on the internet concerning fish.
A long expose on one of the Guatemalan Thorichthys stated that they all have the eyespot on the gill plate with one exception which is not found in Guatemala. Apparently not true.
My original tank is where the fish have completely settled and obviously forgotten their life in the wild. There are 3 Thorichthys. Two are identical without the spot on the gill plate. One is larger than the other and has taken posession of a cave and is rearranging the furniture. I have noticed that he sometimes inflates his throat and extends his gill plates to show that he is boss. He and the other show red under their throats. The other guy has a false eye spot on the gill plates and shows a yellow colouring on his throat and belly.
Photos of the firemouth that I have seen have the eyespot.
I have included a photo of the senior Mayan Cichlid that now has possession of the cave at the other end of the tank. With rounded fins, this may be a female.
