I may be answering my own question here but: I have two heated tanks, both lit with Grolux tubes, both have fish, one is filtered with a sponge filter while the other has an external filter. In the tank with the external filter the roots of the frogbit are short. In the other tank the roots are all over the place, winding around the tank. The leaves look healthy in both tanks.

This is where I think I will be answering my own question. The shorter-rooted plants are fed with Profito and have Easycarbo added. Is this what is keeping the roots shorter?

Thanks.

Sounds feasible, although Easycarb is unlikely to make much of a difference as the plants have access to atmospheric CO2. I run low nutrient tanks and the frogbit roots always race for the substrate. They make a good grazing surface for shrimp and fry, but you can trim them right back if they're a nuisance (they don't take long to regrow though!).

Thanks for the reply Tom. I probably will trim them back. They look a bit unsightly and your experience seems to echo mine in that the roots head for the substrate when there are relatively low nutrient levels.
