My new 2 ft tank has now cycled and today I've done water tests. Ammonia and Nitrite 0, Nitrate 10 dGH 3.6 KH 1.1 and PH 7.0. Apparently over the last 6 months the Ph has come down from 7.4 out of our taps to 7.0. I'm afraid I only do tests if I think there's something wrong, or with a new tank, so I haven't tested for a while and thought it was still the 7.4 it's been for years. I'm pleased with the lowering of the Ph as this means that I can have some Tetras that I thought I wouldn't be able to have before.
Can I just ask what you think of Gold Tetras, or Diamonds? I have a pair of Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlids in the tank and also 6 Ember Tetras who look quite lost in such a big tank, so I wanted a reasonable sized Tetra to put in with them. I also like the Flame Tetra but reading up on them I've read that they like a more mature tank and are also prone to ICH.
Also I'm trying to make the tank a South American Biotope and would like to put some branches in but can't find a Beech tree near where I live. I have a Kilmarnock Willow in my garden which appears to have died off, is it possible to use these branches as they look a great shape for what I want?
Here's a pic of the tank so far, I'm getting rid of the Egeria Densa when the tanks a bit older.
I've used willow in a tank before and didn't have any problems with it so provided you give it a good boiling to remove any parasites etc. it should be fine. Oak is also ok, btw.
As for the tetras by flame tetra I presume you mean H. flammeus which I've always found to be one of the hardier species and certainly not prone to any particular diseases. I've had male diamond tetras well over the 2" mark so I think they're a little big for your tank though.
If you can find some H. loretoensis stays quite small and tends to swim in the upper part of the tank so won't bother your apistos but there are a whole bunch of small characins that would be suitable for you as your water is quite soft. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
