Hey folks. Long time lurker, first time poster.
So I keep Lamprologus Multifasciatus (I have two females and a male at the moment, looking to have them in a small colony when they get breeding. I believe I have se decent sized fry already). I believe I have everything set up right from the substrate and shells to the much finer water parameters and filtration.
My issue is as follows: I'm getting some severe algae on the shells, but I'm not comfortable disturbing them to clean them thoroughly (because I don't know if any fry are underneath or the adult Multis are inside). I have a pretty strict lighting regime and very little natural direct light on the tank itself, though the room is fairy bright during the daytime. Although my water is somewhat hard and alkali from the tap, I do add a half dose of Seachem Cichlid Trace minerals. I suspect the trace minerals might be helping to accelerate the algae growth though.
Any advice on this? Any Multi owners out there know if a little disturbance to the shells for cleaning and general maintenance would harm the integrity of the colony and/or cause distress to the fish?

In the lake, their colonies will be targeted by all kinds of predators looking for unwary fry, and this will undoubtedly result in shells being moved around. These things are able to deal with this, so I'd get stuck in there and not worry too much. A toothbrush and your fingernails should be able to tidy things up well. Would't do any harm to further restrict the light, won't bother the fish, I have my home aquarium lighting set to just be on when I'm not at work, you could even shade the natural light for during the day (in the northern hemisphere, Winter can actually be a worse time for algae in aquaria because the lower angle of the Sun means it can reach further back into a room and shine directly on a tank.).
