Taking the opportunity to introduce myself a little;
I'm Jake, I'm not exactly new to fish keeping but stopped a long time ago and recently found myself wanting to start again.
I recently moved into a new house and have a spare room (what a luxury!) where I can properly restart this great hobby.
I've never had the opportunity to do things right, so I want to start now. This is where you guys come in, since I've heard you are quite serious about fish..
Anyway, in short, my goal is to create a natural habitat for the Trichogaster lalius (Dwarf Gourami.)
They've always been my favorite, but I've never been focussed enough to build an aquarium specially for them.
So my main focus is South-Asia (preferably India) as a biotope.
I've been searching around the internet for pictures but haven't quite found an aquascape from that region that fits my needs.
I would love to get my hands on some footage in order to replicate it (albeit a little smaller.)
I'm also still stuck on the housing of these little fish. I wouldn't mind them being the only living creatures in the aquarium, but (although technically not true to the region, I'm open to suggestions) I wouldn't mind room for a small school (50 or so) of Trigonostigma espei either.
I considered an aquarium of around 120cm x 60cm x 40cm, this seems ideal when it comes to scaping and playing around with wood or stone. But I've also been looking for a corner aquarium, although I wouldn't know what the ideal size would be.
For plants I've considered to go with standard moss, maybe a crypto or two (if I can find C. cordata), a little Javafern and lots of Hygrophila pinnatifida. A simple but heavily planted decor, especially around the edges.
To give the tank a natural look and feel (although I'm still unsure what that means for this Biotope) I was planning on using the same techniques that were used to create this: link1, link2 (it's all fake)
I created this topic to involve other people into my thinking process and share a good idea or two.
