Hi all,

I'm looking at setting up a small reef tank with the following equipment:

15 UK gal tank (24" x 15" x 12")
8 kg Live rock
10lbs Live sand
Elite mini filter with polyfilter
Koralia Nano powerhead
2 x 24W T5 lighting
100W heater

My question is should I use a skimmer on a tank of this size or would frequent water changes suffice?

Looking to keep a yellow clown goby and a clown fish (maybe two?) with some easy to keep corals (not sure what yet!).

Any comments on any of the other equipment or stocking suggestions would be appreciated as well!

Sorry this is a late reply, but in case you are still looking for an answer, I thought I'd chip in.

I'd always go for a skimmer if I were you. Only problem is the size of them vis a vi the size of your tank. They are not the most attractive pieces of equipment you'll ever see! That said, you can get some smaller size ones these days, especially if you go for the motorised versions rather than air-driven.

Thanks for the reply mate, this is still on the cards but other things keep getting in the way (this month it's a greenhouse, last month it was new wardrobes for the boys room, next month i'm sure something else will pop up!).

I've done a load of research on t'interweb and asked on a few nano reef forums - opinion is divided but I think your right - there are a couple of hangon skimmers i've seen that get good write ups and so i'll go for one of them.

If it's not next month then it will be after bloomin' christmas!
