So yesterday after quite some time of persuading my wife and thinking about it i decided to upgrade my small 27L tank to a 65L tank. Now i have always had an interest in fish and wanted to keep tropical fish but i have never managed to get the wife to agree until now.
The nice gentleman in the shop advised me that i could setup my new tank right away and transfer exisiting fish into the tank and they would be fine as i only have 1 medium goldfish, 1 small Hong-Kong Loach and 2 small Shrimps. He also advised that making the jump to tropical would be fine as the goldfish would adapt quickly and the Loach and Shrimps could be kept at tropical temps anyway.
So i got home and set the tank up, excluding the heater and never gave it another thought, until i checked online this morning for temp recommended for the tank. As you can imagine the more i read the more concerned i am that my current fish will suffer the consequences of my mistake.
So what i would like to know is A, what i can do to stop my fish dieing as a result of not 'cycling'. B, how long i should leave it before adding any tropical fish. C, Was the advise about my current fish being fine at tropical temps correct?
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

There are many so called "Tropical" fish that would do fine with water temps that are suitable for Goldfish. As long as you avoid fish that require temperatures of 30+ you will be fine.
As to the cycling, there are several options. Simply monitoring the water quality and doing frequent water changes as needed is one way to protect your fish until the tank cycles. You could also add plants, run the filter from your old tank on the new tank, use some of the substrate or furniture from the old tank in the new tank. Any of these will help jump-start your colony of good bacteria in the new tank. Just remember to monitor your water closely and take action when needed.
Best of luck with your new set-up!
