Irish sphagnum moss is commonly used, however, you'll find the acidity will vary between the 'brands available'. You'll find it difficult these days to buy any sort of peat from garden centres, certainly on Merseyside, and I'm guessing nationally? There is (was?) a peat farm in Kirkby and it used to be possible to buy a sack off the lads digging it up. If you do manage to get hold of some peat make sure it doesn't contain any additives.
