I've got a 20g long aquarium up in my room I'm prepared to start cycling soon. I've been planning what I'm gonna stock it with, and I've kinda figured out what I'm gonna do. 6 scarlet badis (if I can find any...), 8-10 chili rasboras (again, if I can find any), some red cherry shrimp, and a to-be-determined bottom-dweller that won't eat my shrimpies (any suggestions?). Does this seem like an okay stocking to you?

Cake or death?

Hi there.
If I'm not mistaken (I usually deal in liters, cm and mm) a 20g long measures 30" x 12" x 12" making it roughly 75 x 30 x 30 cm.
As far as bio load is concerned, the suggested stocking is even on the low side, meaning you could add a few more fish of the same size.
However, I can say from my experience that Dario dario do not like the Boraras brigittae or any other of their kind for that matter. They are way too lively and quirky. The Darios like it much more calm and sedately.
Having said that, the worst thing that can happen is, that your Darios won't breed and instead of courting will chase little "chilies" around.
Regards
R.

P.S. As a "bottom dweller" maybe Hara jerdoni. Temps shouldn't go above 24* C then but both D. dario and Boraras spp. are happy with that too. They will snack on the odd cherry offspring but so will the Darios. Just see that as natural stock control.

If you must insist on living in a box ...... at least do your thinking outside.

Okay, I didn't realize that scarlet badis didn't like rasboras. If I gave the badis lots of room and plenty of hiding space would that be different, or are chilis just annoying to the badis? Because I would really like my badis to breed if possible.

And for the bottom dweller, I think I might go with cories.

Thanks.

i keep scarlet badis with cpds and hara jerdoni. i wouldnt keep them with chilli rasbora simply because the chillis prefer high temps opposed to 22 c that i keep my cpds at. if its the rasbora you really want i would go for sparkling gouramis, however i do not think these tiny gouramis mix well with shrimp. if its the badis go with cpds or emerald dwarfs instead either will readily breed in the aquarium.  i would go with atleast a dozen cpds cherry shrimp 6 badis 2m 4 f (if you can get them) and 4 hara jerdoni.
