HIya,

Firstly apologies if this is in the wrong place. My first time posting. D:

Basically, I'm about to embark on my first tropical fish tank and after long hours of research and reading have decided I would like to start with a collection of Tetra and Gourami.
However, in a lot of the articles I've read, it mentions that certain Gourami can be aggressive, but doesn't specify much else. I'm concerned that if they are aggressive they may attack the smaller tetra and one another.

I'm looking to begin with Glowlight Tetra, and then introduce Black Neon Tetra, moving on to other species as time goes on. And as far as Gourami go, I've been umm-ing and ahh-ing between Banded Gourami, Dwarf Gourami and Pearl Gourami.
I'm curious to know if any other forum members happen to know much about the Gourami disposition, and if any of the breeds I am looking at would be overly aggressive to the smaller tetras and to each other.0

At the moment I haven't got the tank, or decided on the size of the tank as I am moving into a new flat shortly and won't know how much space I have until I am moved in.

Many thanks,

Ivresse

Hi there Ivresse,

as a general rule some Gouramies and Tetras go quite well together. And that's about all one can say at this stage because all else depends on the size of tank you'll eventually get!

For the time being I'd suggest to have a good look into the profiles of different Gouramies here on SF. After that you'll have a good idea already which are the agressive ones and which are more peaceful and compatible with smaller Tetra species.

Good and reliable advice you can only get once you know what size tank will fit into your new flat. Then you can tell us your water parameters as well and I'm sure we can and certainly will try to help you.

Regards

R.

Like Rudi says much depends on which tank you choose but of those my personal favourite is the pearl gourami. Pretty placid, easy to keep, gorgeous when adult and make a nice 'centrepiece'-type fish for a community tank. Should be fine with the tetras you mention as well.
