I would appreciate confirmation on the gender of these fish

The same fish from the group photo up to down

I’m sorry for the lack of focus. I’m not very good with the camera

You’re better than me with the fish photos. Another hobby of mine is photography but I am incapable of getting fish in focus.

These are hard to tell, could do with them all side on. I’m struggling to even tell them apart in the individual photos. /huh.gif” style=”vertical-align:middle” emoid=”” border=”0″ alt=”huh.gif” />

Thanks for the help Michelle. Tell me about taking pics of these little punks. I took 700 million photos and these are the only ones that are half decent.

Let me try to expand on the photos a bit. The fish are oriented the same way in the group photo and the individual ones. So the top one in the group is also in the second pic, the middle one is in the third pic and the bottom one is pic 4.

They are very similar. I was aiming for three females. Looks like its going to be back to the shop for them.

At first glance I thought they were all girls all being yellow. Its really hard to tell without watching them for a while.

I’m not an expert on these by a long way. If that first one is a boy he’s young and the second I can’t tell, with no colour at all in the tail …

Get a second opinion before going with my guesswork.

    Adendum…
Looking around the web some more there are some females who have more pointed tails and a bit of eye colour, oo that puts a dampner on things.

Were there larger more ornately finned fish in the same tank?

Yea, the supposed males were in the same tank. Blue/grayish bodies with red backs and fin linings.

Are there any behavioral clues to their gender?

I’ve also seen pictures of females witch look pretty much like the fish I got. Check out Duncs topic “Recent photos”. Its on the first page of “Pictures and videos”. Doesn’t it look like the same fish? And the males looked similar to the one there. Just not as much color.

Anyway, thanks bunches for taking an interest. Hopefully someone can shed some more light on the subject.

PS. Very nice tank you got. The one with your rams

Looking at the images of the individual fish…

Pics 2 and 3 I’ll go with female. Pic 1 has me undecided but leaning towards female (face just doesn’t seem a heavy enough build for male).

In my time with them they’re not an easy fish to sex as youngsters. Look for the banding in the caudal fin for the males (but as the following images show of my last aggies, yellow coloration doesn’t automatically mean female!!):

    Male

    And his young lady

Thanks a.d. At what size would u say they are mature enough to make a definite id?

Thanks for the comment on my tank, I really struggle with plants. Just can’t keep them. But that tank looks daft without.

Glad someone else has shown interest in this for you. Beautiful fish BTW! Envious! My pair weren’t as nice as these two.

Spoil them and feed them up, water changes … the usual getting them into spawning condition stuff and see what happens.

Wait a few weeks see what develops. If that first is a male you’re not losing anything at this stage. Still a M1, F2 harem and you can add another female later if you want to.
