An article: Biofloc Production Systems for Aquaculture (SRAC Publication No. 4503) by John A. Hargreaves (an aquacultural engineer) is available from the Southern Regional Aquaculture Center is available for free downloading from:

Biofloc systems use bacteria on suspended organic material (floc) to both house bacterial to process ammonia efficiently, but also to provide the floc as food to shrimp or fish (Tilapia).

Commercially, the process is used to grow filter feeding shrimp and fish to high densities cheaply while limiting the use of water.

Thanks Bill. Think they might be using this system in Tilapia farms here in Spain so will definitely have a read later.
