Does any one have any info on the different types of cupidos from different regions. I have two males bought from two different LFS wild caught supposedly both are from Peru with slightly different body shapes. One seems to have a higher arcing head if that makes sense. I will try to get pics.
April 12, 2015 at 10:32 pm #354422One might not even be a B. cupido. The closely related B. wavrini looks like it and might have been misidentified. There are even others that look like Biotodoma; Cleithracara maronii is one that I think looks like them. Pictures would help those of us who could Id them. I’m not very good with id and when you get the pictures up someone should be able to identify them for you.

One male standard shape. Both are male I know that for sure.
April 13, 2015 at 2:41 pm #354424Stunning fish! It’s likely IMO that at some point Biotodoma will have more than the two described species. Whether yours represent variation within forms of cupido or are two different species, impossible to say. I’ve had two other forms of cf. cupido from Brazil, love those fish.
April 13, 2015 at 6:38 pm #354425Barb man and coelacanth thanks for the help. The cupido are a fascinating fish the first five I’ve had for five years now. They are the first fish I’ve had breed in my tank.
April 13, 2015 at 7:51 pm #354426You’re in a select club if you’ve had these successfully breed for you.
April 13, 2015 at 8:18 pm #354427So I believe. There is very little info on them though which is a bit disappointing. I have a few vids the hump head one and a female swimming about with fry. And another vid of the other pair with eggs on a piece of wood. Out of the original five I ended up with two breeding pairs.
April 15, 2015 at 8:05 am #354433That is crazy lucky. Did the fry go on to other people? I wish I had the space for some B. waverni I just like them better I guess
April 15, 2015 at 11:19 am #354434Wavrini or cupido they are all nice just wish i had separate tanks to keep both. As for the fry I am going this weekend to buy a tank and all the gear for raising fry properly. I would like some more as I am hopefully getting a bigger tank next year but my local fish stores can’t guarantee they will be getting more in as they don’t sell well as juveniles. You’d think they would put a picture on the tank of mature wavrini or cupido to show how stunning they are as adults.
April 28, 2015 at 7:27 pm #354559the second picture you posted shows a female and a male, the fish on the right i would like to see more of but it looks like a female too, the first picture shows a male, the other fish in the picture is a bit blurred to make a call on the sex, great to see another keeper of these fish.
Mac78, how did you get on with the fry, did you raise any young?
here is a link to some videos i posted on utube of cupido spawning and raising their young

May 1, 2015 at 9:06 pm #354572Hello joe. I haven’t managed to raise young yet just free swimming for about two weeks. I did manage to get another three juveniles from my LFS last year so far it looks like I have a male and two females. The cupids are such an interesting fish. So much so that I am going to get a bigger tank with a more dedicated setup for them. Cheers for the link to your vids I hope I get to your level just once.
May 3, 2015 at 1:07 am #354576no reason why you won’t, keep up the water changes and good work, cheers joe
