think that the channa are becoming the latest fad – certain individuals always seem to go for certain fish at the same time – ie it was rays a couple of years ago, then asian aro , then fly river turtles, then dats – its a bit like fish bragging on certain sites with some people – and much as id like to keep them it makes me feel less so when these people get them. it seems that a lot of people are more interested in bragging rights or ‘fish collecting’ rather than fish keeping

better to keep guppies if thats what your into rather than the ‘big thing’ – saw 1 person who has a decent size tank and good filtration but there was like 5 or 6 18inch aros, pair of rays , dats – all in the same tank – they all looked in good condition but for me i like to keep the fish as happy as i can , not keep them in what is in effect an 18th century zoo (if you know what i mean- animals in small enclosures looking bored out of their minds , not acting naturally) sad really as this person thinks that this is a great tank just cos the fish were expensive

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve done the big fish in innapropriate tanks debate to death. One tropical fish dealer laughed at me for being a killi keeper when I said a tigrinus cat needed a tank bigger than 6′ x 2′ as they grow to 2 foot in lengh themself. Apparently as I don’t have big cats at home I know nothing about keeping them. Even though I’ve looked after quite a few when I worked in the trade. And I should be breeding killis for him to feed for his real fish.

Sad really. I’ve also seen the fish collecting that goes on elsewhere. I reckon I know exactly who you’re talking about on here. lol

What really makes me laugh though is that a lot of these collectors seem to massively over estimate their own knowledge. One self styled guru even confessed that his RTC killed his nice expensive tigrinnus cat (Surely his tank was big enough for both?????) and then posts pictures of a gulper cat that had just eaten an 18″ arrowana by accident. Yet, in their own little world they believe they are Heiko or Herbert!

I’m not saying it’s a case of “small penis syndrome” But………..

Yeah indeed. There was a lad I’m sure a few of you know from a forum that Matt and I used to use.. he would buy the “flavour of the month” fishes, get bored of them within two to three months then flog them on. Always used the same excuse.. “need the money”. Aye, need the money to go and buy next month’s “flavour of the month” fish.

He had aros, dats, rays.. and a decent size tank to be fair.. but his attitude was scary. He should’ve just saved the money and bought a penis extension.

This topic has derailed quite a bit so I’m gonna shift it

I have to admit I got sick of the amount of people that told me I was stupid when I said I was getting my 7ft tank and told them I would be keeping Loaches, Barbs and Rasboras in it. They would look at me like I was dumb and say what about aro’s or rays or big fish but I like lots of smaller fish and lots of variety and movement.

A few of them have changed their minds now they have seen the tank but quite a few still say its a waste of a big tank.

In my time I have kept pretty much everything at some point, Ive done the rifts, livebearers, rainbows, characins, corydoras and discus etc but always came back to loaches and rasboras so for me you will always get more pleasure out the fish you like best rather than the fish others say you should like.

my big problem is at the moment ive got space for 1 or 2 tanks and want to keep everything again. i think ill go with a smallish marine tank to give it a go but for the bigger tank i cant make a decision, hopefully ill just see something i fancy
