I recently bought a group of boraras brigittae. On further inspection, I realised none looked alike, and very few looked similar to the description/pictures on seriously fish. Two of my fish are definitely merah. On some of the other fish, the black stripe gets very thin/disappears around mid body so that the fish looks somewhat like a merah with a long spot and a small spot right after it. Does that fit the description of boraras brigittae?

I’ll try to upload decent pictures as soon as I can.

WP_20151029_028-1.jpgBlack stripe disappears under the dorsal fin, reappears in the form of a thin stripe right after. First segment is diamond shaped.

WP_20151029_030-2.jpgFish in foreground is same as previous picture. The one in the background has two clearly distinct spots. The first one is oval shaped. They seem to be joined by a very thin line near the dorsal fin.

WP_20151029_034-2.jpgSame as first picture. Stripe thins out to form two spots.

Does look like B. merah, yes.

These look like brigittae to me. I had a group of eleven B. brigittae and one B. merah and the merah never really schooled with the brigittae and now I’ve got one B. micros and it doesn’t school either. They don’t seem picked on just separate from the B. brigittae

Do merah and brigittae mimic each other in mixed overlapping populations?

There is evidence to suggest that to be the case, but nothing concrete as far as I know?

Merah have a narrower caudal peduncle, apparently,

My ‘merah coloured’  boraras definitely has the same dimensions as my brigittae.

I redesigned the aquarium for a more natural look. The fish coloured up, they are definitely brigittae. I’ll post pictures as soon as I can.
