There had been a lovely little (~6cm TL) catfish at Aquajardin for some weeks, with no tank label, which I could not resist bringing home with a group of six Barilius hukaungensis. The manager, who had popped in on his day off said it was Tanganyikan (up until that point a staff member and I had been looking at “wood catfish”), despite being in a display tank with fish like Slender Lionhead Cichlids; Upside Down Catfish; Leopard Bushfish. For £4.50, I just had to bring it home!

As soon as I got in I started looking for ID inspiration and I’m fairly confident that it is from one of the above two genus. I did start to worry a little though when I read about the toxic mucus released by one possible catfish, Lophiobagrus cyclurus, when stressed!

No experience of those cats I’m afraid and don’t recognise that Barilius species name since it doesn’t appear to correspond to any described species or known synonym. Closest match spelling-wise is B. huahinensis which is either valid or a synonym of Opsarius koratensis, depending on who you follow…

A couple of the Barilius, very similar looking to B. dogarsinghi

(need to find out how to embed videos on here)
