I’ve always used the Hagen Mini Elite Filter in my 20 litre Betta tank, turned on low with the flow pointing at the side of the tank. I’ve kept many Bettas in there over several years but my present Betta a Plakat, doesn’t seem to be coping that well.

I’ve found that Bettas are quite intelligent little fish and once my old ones have got caught in the current they seem to learn the lesson, but this little chap keeps getting shot across the tank. So, I thought I’d put in my Huey Hung sponge filter that I used to use in my Shrimp tank, but I don’t know if it needs cycling first.

Should I leave the Elite in for a while until the sponge has cycled, and how will I know when to take out the Elite?

Sorry if these questions seem stupid, but I was advised not to bother cycling the filter when it was in the Shrimp tank so I don’t know how to go about changing over.

What I would do is put the new sponge in a jug with some tank water and then add the existing sponge and give it a few good squeezes and leave them for a while so that some bacteria has chance to get onto the new sponge.

You could also try using an elastic band to secure the old sponge against the new one and that should let bacteria colonise the new sponge while running, I have done this a couple of time when setting up a small tank quickly and have never had any complications.

The alternative would be to move the existing media over to the new filter (assuming it will fit).

or run both together for a few weeks – nice and easy.

I like the Mini Elite – just bought one over the weekend for my 12 litre as my hang on went kaput, was just going to be a temporary measure until I found something smaller (it’s more difficut to find a dinky filter than a giant one!) but i’m so impressed with it so far that I think i’ll leave it.

I’ve always used the mini Elite in all my small tanks and really like it. At one time I had 5 Betta tanks ranging from 8 to 20 litres and used the mini Elite in all of them. It’s just this Betta who seems to take off all the time.

Perhaps he likes it, but I don’t think it can be doing him any good, he’s only the second Plakat I’ve had so I don’t know much about them except they are much faster than other Bettas. The other PK used to live in a 75 litre with Harlequins and Corries but I don’t remember him having any problems with the flow.
