Hi I am new to keeping tropical fish but trying to do what I should be doing according to the book/s ( which all advise something different! )
My tank is 3ft x 1ft x 1ft 6″ and has been running for a few weeks and has 5 5banded barbs in it and a sucker fish.
2 days ago I decided to introduce 10 neons ,2 have died today, after a period of swimming in a vertical position close to the surface for a few hours.
Any ideas? The water was fine at testing last time.

From what you’ve described, it sounds like your neons were gasping for breath.

When was the last time you did a partial water change? I’d recommend testing your water again. If you have any trace of ammonia or nitrites, do a water change of 40%. Also test for nitrates, if they colour noticeably, do a 40% water change.

To be honest, even if all of your tests return low, I’d probably recommend doing a 25% water change anyway.

One option is that the neons were suffering from some form of internal infection. Neons are commonly bred these days for the trade and some specimens you find in shops are just awful. Might be worth trying to get some money back from your LFS then looking elsewhere.

    Hey Carmella

Neons suffer from a nasty illness that is usually confined to characins. If you search the Internet for ‘Neon Tetra disease’ or ‘illness specific to characins’ you should find more information about this.

We also covered Neons, in great depth, over two Issues of the Aquarium Gazette.

    Regards David
