What’s a ‘special bacteria filter’? Just sounds like a normal biological unit? 😛

“The special bacteria filter purifies waste materials, such as ammonia, so that we can keep fish for up to 90 days” — one that collapses after 90 days? 😛

Actually, it may be something more sophisticated. The constrains here are (1) small tank size to start with (2) limited amount of clean water available. Is medaka presumed to be hardy enough to survive and breed for 90 days with no w/c at all?

So I’d guess one would have a normal biological filter plus some kind of special chemical water purification system.

Yeah, there are lots of resins that they could be using, but in ths case it looks like they are just using regular biological filtration with activated carbon and an option for changing water as backup http://iss.jaxa.jp/kibo/kibomefc/aqh_e.html
