    Hi all
I got some large Garras lately to take care for. My first thouht was Garra rufa, but I’ve never seen such large specimen: 14 to 16.5 cm TL. Second thought: G. ceylonensis.
    Any opinions?
    Cheers Charles

Hi Charles ,my guess would be that they are an Indian variety ?

    Hi Andy
I went through the list on fishbase but couldn’t find a match. Do you have an idea about an Indian species?

    G. ceylonensis should have a lateral stripe I think? What else came in with them Charles?

That’s why I came back to G. rufa.
If anybody knows pics of old specimen …
As I said, Matt: I took them over, from third hand because they had grown to large. Otherwise the surviving could have been in doubt. And I just got news that a forth has been found in that tank. Wonder how it could escape then. Put them in my “sunny-daylight” 240 l-tank with a lot of algae, but it seems they never learned how to munch algae: just waiting for food.

Bit of a long shot, but these look like the Garra congoensis that recently appeared on the Wildwoods stocklist for the first time, albeit these from this thread do appear to be a bit longer.

how about this one from Ingo Seidl?

    http://www.aqua-global.de/Bilder/Garra_mullya.jpg

two things make me wonder in comparison of the above with my few years old G.rufa:

    – my rufa miss these 2 “points” between the nasal openings

    http://www.seriouslyfish.com/wp-content/uploads/imported/monthly_04_2012/post-414-1335049053.jpg

    – the proportions of mouth/disc-size. G.rufa, I think, have a more pointed head, than Charles’ one. I think the rufa mouth is not as wide as for example the flavatra mouth. The above has proportions like G.flavatra. I took pic’s oif both fl. and rufa, and also “researched” their very different facial tubercel pattern. Wich (I just checked)seems not as clear anymore as when the rufa were younger (or my eyes git worse – which is a very possible option :)))

A friend of mine had some looking similar to the above, also did not have any signs of facial tubercles, but did have these two “spots”:

Bernd Kaufmann shows a Garra ceylonensis ceylonensis  without lateral stripe (my rufa also can show a lateral stripe occasionally, as well as a little “blue” cheek-spot and black spots azt the base of dorsal rays).

here one of my few years old one with (a possible baby of her), mine have lot of room and can move from tank to tank, but do not get larger then 10-12cm TL (I estimate).

Looking at Garras I focus on:

    — facial (permanent, at least in first years) tubercles

    — fin size and shape

    — shape of head and proportion disc/mouth-width/head-width

    — other facial “entities” (like those 2 close to each other in center of face of Charles’ abd my friends Garras)

did a quick screen of my archive, as I know I have more detailed pic’s of comparing flavatra with rufe mouth proportions, but could not find it.

P.S.: my browser (firefox) shows my post different than in the edit mode, in edtit mode it’s looking ok. PLease let me know whether ir also shows weird in your browser and, if I can fix this somehow, thanks.

I think G. congoensis is a more elongate fish. Here’s a pic of Mark’s I have labelled as that species:

Wolfram, there are still some things we need to fix with the forum – my post also looks fine in editor then looks different when I save (in Chrome). Will ask Dunc to take a look. 😉

No problem Matt, we are happy to have this forum in first place, one step at a time 🙂

For now I just post the direct links as well, as my pic’s don’t open.

The Garra sp. from a frined of mine, that has those features like Charles’ ones:

Here my G.rufas, they are 3 years old:

    thank, Wofram. Could match.

    G. congoensis has an elongate head too, Matt. Thanks anyway to all.
