One of the lfs has had these fish in for a while, they are labelled as “Mackerel barbs” but, I cannot find anything about them, something looks familiar which I cannot put my finger on. The photos were taken with my phone so are terrible, especially as these fish are never stationary.

Of course….thanks Matt. LFS member of staff told me he was sure they were African which threw me right of the scent. They are lovely even in the stock tank, voracious eaters too. I don’t have a tank for them, unfortunately http://www.google.co.uk/images?sa=3&q=…G=Search+images

I actually started to tackle this genus but wimped out – another taxonomical minefield.

I’ve just been checking out some threads on Petfrd, and there’s some beautiful pics of Graeme’s B. canarensis.

My largest tank is only 1 metre long, I think too short for these active fish

Can confirm 3′ tank is too small. Think Graeme and I both got supposed B. canarensis from the same batch – had a disaster with mine when returning them to Tom’s shop during the move. They’d grown a fair bit and I underestimated their oxygen requirements. Three subadult specimens per bag not a good idea. /laugh.gif” style=”vertical-align:middle” emoid=”” border=”0″ alt=”laugh.gif” />

Its a horrible bump of an old thread, but being an owner of two Opsarius pulchellus (sadly two males, last in superb LFS that apparently had a batch of ~40 in autumn 2009, way before I started the hobby), I could not resist…

I recently found a nice set of disply pics after trawling the interweb for a while:-

A local shop has a tank of “mackeral barb” which I think I identified as containing Barilus backeri; canarensis (the gorgeous red dorsal and black/white blotchy caudial fins); dogarsinghi (which looks so similar to my guys, just without the red dorasl fin)…

Edit: I’m an embedding video novice! Can anyone spot what is incorrect in the code below?

    O. pulchellus is one of my favourite species, absolutely marvellous to watch. Hope to keep it again one day!
