While netting some mosquito larvae from my water butt yesterday I caught some small, red ‘worms’. Are these bloodworms and if so, are they okay to feed to my Harlequins? Thanks.

Although these flies resemble mosquitos, they are very different. Chironomus is a non-biting midge.

btw I almost read that line as midget

They do look like that, about 10mm long and about 1mm wide. I was hoping to catch a few, rinse them under the tap in the net and drop them into the tank.

Do it and don’t even bother rinsing ’em.

Thanks for your help everyone. I caught some bloodworms yesterday and fed them to my Harlequins and they absolutely loved them!
