I have heard of, but am not familiar with, the system that killiefish keepers use to track their different local varieties. Can anyone either give me a quick explanation of this or point me to a description of it somewhere?

I am thinking this might be useful for varieties of Danios, or rather Danionins. I am thinking of local varieties, not-yet-described species, and fish I might obtain that might be difficult to classify to a particular species for whatever reason. I get the fish probably three or four steps removed from where they were collected or bred so any locality information will not be easy to get nor necessarily correct.

    Any thoughts?

Hi Bill, think there’s more than one system in use but the basic one involves a series of letters and numbers, with the former referring variously to the initials of the collector/country and usually the location (either a number or place name) plus year or date of collection.

Not sure how easily this could be applied to commercially-imported fish though since as you say accurate location details will be iimpossible to get in many cases.

We’ve recently been discussing how best to deal with unidentified species in our Knowledge Base so you might find that discussion interesting. See here: http://www.seriouslyfish.com/forums/freshwater-and-brackish-water-fishes/species-numbering-systems-in-the-knowledge-base/

Yeah like Matt said it varies a bit. But to give you one example:

Laimosemion agilae Crique Soumourou GMRWZ 09-03 – where Crique Soumourou is the locality where the fish were collected. GMRWZ stands for Guyane (the country they were collected in), and then the names of the collectors Maurice, Rozier, Weber and Zent. 09 stands for 2009 which is the year they were collected in and 03 is the locality number where each locality they collected is given a number in order of collection. So this would be the third locality they collected fish from during this trip.

This is pretty hard to replicate for fish that we don’t know the exact locality of where they were collected. Some people like to give fish from commerical imports the tag CI followed by the year they were imported. For example (just making this one up) Colisa chuna CI 2013. I suppose this could be useful to separate some imports from the normal aquarium strains if they differ in some way or are believed to maybe be a new species.
