I was chatting with Mick last night via the dog n bone , and he was expressing his doubts about the pic of Puntius Phutunio , and asked if i’d check it and verify , Mick was right , it isn’t !

its all Matt’s fault…but we’ll close an eye cause of the senoritaputa, aka landlady chucking him out

There’ll likely be a bunch like this Andy. We paid for a disc with some images a couple of years back when we first started this off. To say I was disappointed with the contents would be an understatement. Although we’re using a lot of the images it’s only because we don’t have anything better. Trying to rectify that as we go and deleting said images as we get new ones. Hopefully they’ll all be gone eventually. Thanks for the heads up!

Karlos, were not sure mate but there are a couple of fish it could be if that fish was a contaminant.
the two names that are possibles but not 100% sure are, P didi and P tian tian.

I have the paper describing those two Mick. Let me have a check. I’ve also deleted the image from the P. phutunio profile. The problem with these damn JJ pics is that we did a batch upload i.e. trusted they were all correct and just uploaded them en masse. Suffice to say we learnt our lesson and haven’t done anything similar since as this isn’t the first case of misidentification we’ve encountered.

I’d agree with Mick on the possibilities of the fish being either P.tinantian , P.didi, or even a female Odessa ? there are a whole glut of Barbs coming out of Burma that look similar to each other , and without a few aquarium pics are difficult to pin point .

If i’m not mistaken i think there might be a pic of a P.Phutunio in the paper about Puntius’s Tiantian and Didi ? they were discussing the chance that Phutunio might have been confused with one of the two Barbs Tiantian and , or Didi ?

Pattern wise Phutunio is close to Narayani in that it has a mid body blotch , spot ?
I remember reading that in the wild Phutunio reaches about 4 inches , though i’d seriously doubt it !

From what I can remember they started collecting fish that looked like phutunio in northern Myanmar and that’s how the two new ones were discovered Andy. Five mins I’ll just have a look now.

Here are the images from the paper.

    P. didi:

    P. phutunio:

Also I was a bit out in what I said above; the authors started looking for phutunio-type fishes in Myanmar as they already suspected the presence of new species that were previously considered phutunio. The latter is now known not to occur in Myanmar. Our pic most closely resembles tiantian of those three for me.

i’d say tiantian as well Matt, the puduncle spot is a match as is the shoulder mark it also shows the mark right above the gill plate.

Do you guys think we could do a P. tiantian profile using this pic or that we can’t be 100%?
