I’ve been looking for a fish to live alongside my WCMM’s in my 90 litre temperate tank and have come across Rice Fish but can’t find any information on them at all. My LFS say they can get some in but I like to read up on a new fish before buying them.

    Any info please

There are several ricefish on the market, the best suited for a unheated tank are Oryzias latipes
you will need to check which ones your LFS are getting
Care is easy enough clean water, mine do well in hard water but they are not too fussy feeding is easy flake or live food is taken, breeding is easy they are egg hangers the female carries the eggs around like a bunch of grapes till they are brushed off by plants or a spawning mop.the fry take BBS as soon as free swimming

As ricefish suggests O. latipes is the only temperate Oryzias. I believe they have not been imported for some years (please tell me otherwise) but they should be available if some wholesaler is brave. Many retailers will tell you that they cannot be imported (which probably translates as “I dont understand the legislation in regard to coldwater fish and I can’t be bothered to find out”) but they are only subject to the same restrictions as Koi and Goldfish for import. They are a lovely little surface feeding temperate fish that is sadly not freely available. I would hope that everybody who still has a population of these fish will keep them going and make them available.

I thought I saw some of these for sale in the Lincoln branch of Maidenhead a few weeks ago so just had a look tropicalfishfinder.com.

There is stock showing in the Oxford and Harlestone Heath branches so they do appear to be being imported. If these branches of Maidenhead have them it may be worth checking your local store as they may be able to order them in.
