new member here. Bought 3 loaches locally recently as “Acanthocobitis botia” for my N India biotope. They are certainly not this species, but a Schistura sp. But which one?

They are greyish brown, lighter toward tail (almost yellowish), with red base on tail and dorsal fins. Other fins mostly colourless with black streaks. Black spot at front base of dorsal fin. One specimen larger and duller, but appear to be same species. Head markings are blurred, not very distinct. Barbels short. Territorial and semi-aggressive to each other, ignore other fish (rosy barbs and giant danios), unless bothered.

Appear to be S. multifasciata/mahnerti group (they certainly resemble S. mahnerti, but not 100% sure). Store say they from India, but that could be mistake, as they were labeled incorrect.

Hi there and welcome to SF. :)

This ‘group’ is a total nightmare identification-wise and we’ve a bunch of photos of similar-looking fishes which could all be the same or different species! That said, if your fish are from India that would preclude S. mahnerti which is a Thai species.

Among the pics we have your fish seem most reminiscent of these two, the first is traded as S. sp. redtail (pic credit Mark Duffill) and the second is from the Garo Hills in Meghalaya, NE India and has tentatively been id’d as S. sijuensis.

Thanks for the reply. The Schistura sp. redtail of the first photo is very close, if not identical. Its markings fall in the range of variation of the 3, that I have. Any more photos or info about this species? Probable, that mine are either this species or S. mahnerti.

The Indian origin was listed on the sign and they were sold as Zipper Loaches by the LFS, which could be from confusion, if the importer collected them in the same region, where Zipper Loaches occur. Or the origin could be wrongly labeled (which is why I not exclude S. mahnerti).

Not really I’m afraid, just that they were imported to the UK a couple of years ago and said to be from India.
