This is the Riu Gavet in the Riu Noguera Pallaresa drainage, upper Ebro basin near the town of Tremp, Catalunya.

Flowing fairly swiftly but for the most part around 15 cm deep. Stone and gravel substrate.

Here lives a population of the freshwater river blenny Salaria fluviatilis which I was over the moon about as I’ve been looking for this species since coming to Spain! These were invisible from the surface due to the water movement and their cryptic colours so it was mask, snorkel and hand nets all the way.

Also here Phoxinus bigerri and a Barbus sp. (didn’t catch the latter):

This was built along a bridge across the road about 200 m downstream. Any ideas?

Nice pics – particularly like the first one of the S. fluviatilis.

Great pics Matt, some sort of pico hydro power or a modern aquaduct? Any ideas where the pipes came out?

Cheers chaps! Aye Dave appears to be part of a hydroelectric system eh? Had a look on Google Earth and the pipes seem to spill out into a man-made lake that we couldn’t see from where we were.

yep – would appear to be hydro, could be a stand alone system with small turbines (believe it or not thats enough of a drop in that pic to generate plenty of electrickery) or more likely those pipes drop again somewhere.

Can’t find anything in english on t’interweb but a few sites in french(! – you close to the border there?) and spanish.

So we finally get to see the mysterious blenny. Really cool fish, nice to see that they’re still out there as well.

they are eating big quantities of shrimps – it’s a luck I have thousends – and they are looking fine. specially the dominant male. not bad for a “non-tropic” species?

the youngsters like to hang in the plants
