When setting up my aquarium, I forgot to put some substrate under the gravel. The tank now has fish and I wanted to add some plants. Of course to add plants, I need some kind of substrate right? What can I do?:(

Very much depends on the plant species you get as not all feed through their roots but for those that do I’d recommend using fertiliser tablets.

Well I don’t know which plants to put yet. Can you help me choose? It’s 35cm long, 20cm wide, and 23cm high. I have about 4 or 5cm of gravel and a fast-enough flow.

What about some plants that can be attached to the décor? Java fern, Anubias, and various mosses can all be grown this way, for example.

Matt’s suggestion is a good one.

Also, most plants will just as happily take their nutrients from the water column as from the substrate, so if you have a suitable fert dosing regime then there’s no reason you can’t plant into gravel.
