Im setting up a new 8x2x2 footer for my Malawi’s and i’ve decided to go down the T5 route for lighting using 2 x twin 54w ballasts to run 4 x 46″ Marine White tubes. Im seeking advice as to the best place to order the tubes from. Best price ive seen for a 14,000k Marine White tube is £15.43 each (I need 4).

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi Bungy,

Sorry for the delayed reply – have you sourced anything yet – thats a good price for a 54W 46″ tube. Anywhere between £19-£30 is an average spread!

Good luck with it and let us know if you find anything cheaper! We would also love to see some pics when it’s up and running.

I’m pricing up a little marine tank now. Got the lighting from a while ago (unfortunately it’s the juwel hi-lite so it’s gonna cost me a fortune to replace the tubes!) and the tank itself (16″ cube) just need everything else now!

I’ve just realised that your looking at Malawi’s – any reason your going for the marine 14,000k lights? That light has a lot of blue in it which might give you some algae issues?

If Mbuna they’re mostly algal grazers so maybe for that?

Im after a crisp white light and my peers from other forums etc have suggested using these Marine White tubes for the best effect?

Fair enough – that type of light coupled with nutrients such as nitrates/phosphates may lead to algae forming – algae thrives on the blue peaks in light. If you have algae grazers or you can keep control of the nitrates/phosphates by regular water changes etc then this may not be an issue. If you do get a bit of algae then you should be able to control it with frequent removal anyway.

Just to give an update on this project – Ive ordered 2 x twin Hagen GLO High Output lighting units for use with 39w – 36″ T5 tubes, 4 tubes in total. Slightly less wattage than my previous idea but the 46″ would have been too long to fit in each 4 foot hood section so the 36″ now have it.

Tank should arrive this week. Ive got the cabinet and im currently installing all the relevant pipework for the sump, electrics for heaters, pumps and lights and merrily staining the woodwork for waterproofing.

Still need more advice please regarding the spectrum of T5’s to bring out the best colours in the fish without turning my Yellow Labs into Goldfish and Albinos into pink thingies……

    All thoughts appreciated.

I don’t know what the aquarium lighting section is like, but the replacement tubes for my S.A.D. 360W lightbox are “cheap as chips” at http://www.lampspecs.co.uk

Here’s a good site (in finnish, but it doesn’t matter to this particular page)
    http://saurama.aqua-web.org/index.htm

This shows some of the different colours of fluorescent tubes…
