Ok so here’s the story – we need to update our forum software but to do that also need a new ‘skin’. To those unfamiliar this is a design template which fits over the basic forum and changes its appearance. The stuff down the side there, the colour scheme and the banner at the top are all part of this skin.

Unfortunately we don’t have the technical prowess to do it ourselves and it ain’t cheap – the best quote we’ve got is $282, which neither of us have at the moment. /tongue.gif” style=”vertical-align:middle” emoid=”:p” border=”0″ alt=”tongue.gif” />

Could you not have a donation button to see if could raise funds for the upkeep/update of the site?
    only an idea

Yeah it’s something we’ve considered but I think if we could get the money from advertising it’d be better for everyone really – the advertisers get something, we get something and the users don’t have to spend any money /smile.gif” style=”vertical-align:middle” emoid=”:)” border=”0″ alt=”smile.gif” />

What about at the bottom of the species profile pages a box containing links to sponsers websites, rather than trying to make the money off one person/company try a few, smaller fee but more contributers.

At a lower rate I may be able to help and maybe have either NEA, MJD Aquatics or LAGB as sponser/sponsers.

I was thinking the same. Maybe set up paypal or something easy. I’m stupid when it comes to the technology so a small donation woud be my means of contributing. Small donations from many can add up!
Might just combine all the suggestions, all good!

Not sure what you’re thinking as for criteria but a few possibilties for advertisers over here would be:

Are you hosting on a dedicated server? If not, £80pm seems a little steep for a hosting account, or even a VPS, considering the hits you get. For example, I currently administrate a parenting website where the forum regularly receives in excess of 1,000,000 page views a month, and last months post count was 26,000. We currently run on a VPS that costs £45pm including the control panel software. The forum software we use is called SMF and it’s free to use and there are plenty of skins already available. We just use the standard one. As for donations, they can certainly help. We recently raised £1800 (enough to cover 2 years at the current rate) via a donation drive, however, we do have in excess of 2000 active members.

It’s a dedi box Bully, hosts more than just SF, but we pay the costs. In terms of page views we’re getting about 150,000/month.

We could easily just use a defacto blue-ish forum skin and have it as a separate part of the website but we really want it to feel integrated with the other pages. There’s already a huge split between forum usage and knowledge base, we’d rather try and minimise that where possible.

Lol @ the PFK suggestion Keith and yeah we had some dealings with ROMan in the early days but tbh he came across as arrogant and wanted to dictate numerous things so we gave up on him. We were thinking more along the lines of TA Aquaculture, ZM Foods or something like that but no idea if they’d be interested. Pier Aquatics would also be great but we sent Neill a message ages ago offering a free ad (because we love his shop) and he never replied.

Frank’s Aquarium is an interesting one but why would he want to advertise on a UK-based site?

Bully, a parenting website?? What’s the addy?

Well, you got a good price for a dedicated server < {POST_SNAPBACK}>

Aye, a friend of mine used to work for the company we get it from. He’s left but we still get “mates rates”.

    Cannot fault that! /biggrin.gif” style=”vertical-align:middle” emoid=”:D” border=”0″ alt=”biggrin.gif” />

Unfortunately, our host has gone down this evening. Our server admin is unable to connect via SSH, so the issue would appear to be at the data centre….v.annoying! Anyhow, enough about that /smile.gif” style=”vertical-align:middle” emoid=”:)” border=”0″ alt=”smile.gif” />
