I think it was probably your imagination. Aquarium plant strips have been manufactured as non invasive for quite a few years. I think it’s pretty unlikely they were the problem.

Nice specimens, but am looking foward to viewing the tank you have planned for their adult size!

Without prejudice to your results Anthony, I would still advise all new fishkeepers to stick to tried and tested means to mature their tank. A mature filter from scratch within a couple of days simply is not possble.

I think another question to consider here is how long the filters were switched off when you moved? And did you clean them out or anything before switching back on?

The filter bacteria starts to die off soon after the filters go off and after about six hours or so the filter will be pretty much dead. Whether dead, or merely impaired, you’ve then added another fish which has increased the bioload, hence the sky-high ammonia.

I think it is more likely a filter / water quality problem that killed off the fish, especially within such a short timescale and to wipe out the whole tank.

Hi John – the singapore postal service is effectively a government body, and like most government bodies here, they get things done incredibly quickly – mostly because labour is so cheap and they throw people at it!

I guess this is where you start to see the trade offs that justify the lower price point for the unit as a whole.

Nice to see a vote in favour!

It’s interesting to note how being kept in the correct conditions (or not) can alter the behaviour of the fish.

I had a pair of Mayan cichlids a few years ago – can’t remember the species of the top of my head – and they are real characters. Seems like Emily is too!

Have been to the show a couple of times when I lived in the UK – but it’s a bit of a trek these days!

Sorry this is a late reply, but in case you are still looking for an answer, I thought I’d chip in.

I’d always go for a skimmer if I were you. Only problem is the size of them vis a vi the size of your tank. They are not the most attractive pieces of equipment you’ll ever see! That said, you can get some smaller size ones these days, especially if you go for the motorised versions rather than air-driven.

Agree with what’s being said here. Personally, I prefer the Eheims but nothing wrong with the Tetras either.
